Shaker Cabinets set the foundation for any home decor.
Shaker Cabinets start the base for a home’s look. Working well with timeless, farmhouse decor and sleek modern looks, shaker style never goes out of style. Painted or stained wood, either look compliments many different homes and trends.
Quick history of the Quakers.
English immigrants started building Shaker Cabinets in America back in 1774. Seeking religious asylum, the Quakers fled from England and moved to America with the hopes of a better life. Other Americans watched how they worshipped with quick and erratic movements, coining the nickname “Shaking Quakers”. This was eventually shortened to Shakers, and thus they named their cabinet style.
Quakers enjoyed the simple life; growing their own food, living off the land, setting their roots in New England and building furniture for their homes. Their simplistic furniture look wasn’t a surprise. Shaker doors consisted of a flat panel in the center with four raised pieces of wood framing it. The clean design allowed for mass production within the Quaker community, which meant they were able to sell the surplus to people outside of their immediate area. Soon, Shaker Cabinets were in high demand and wanted throughout America in the 1850’s.
Styles come and go. Shaker Cabinets stay.
This understated, classic style that goes with every theme is still the most requested look in cabinetry. Its flexibility and complimentary attitude works well with modern, classic, farmhouse, really any trend. Knowing that paint colors can change but the Shaker Cabinets will stay relevant adds home value. Why change the wood when a trendy paint color can be rolled on instead?
We interviewed with Rent. recently and when we were asked the best way clients can mimic Joanna Gaines’ decorating style, the answer was quick and easy. Shaker Cabinets. She uses these almost exclusively in her designs to compliment the surrounding decor. Instead of making the cabinet doors loud and proud, she lets them frame the details she adds in plants and stonework. Click here to read the interview!
Commission Wachusett Woodworks to build your dream cabinets.
We love working with the clean, timeless construction of Shaker Cabinets! Hutches, built-ins, vanities, bookshelves can all implement shaker doors in their designs. Their sturdiness paired with clean lines makes a fetching look for painted or stained finishes. We’ve used these doors both ways and love them each for different reasons. Painted smooths out a room and white really brightens and lightens. Meanwhile, stained doors show the beauty of the grain. There’s much more texture in a stained door. Each finish option is viable, just depends on the final room design!
