Texas Furniture Maker | Meet Josh Newton

Custom Texas Furniture Maker Josh Newton takes his clients’ ideas and vision then translates them into wood.

Wachusett Woodworks lives and breathes because Josh designs and creates the furniture that comes into his head. As a Texas Furniture Maker, he pulls inspiration from Japanese and Viking culture to make unique pieces that stand out while standing the test of time. His love for woodworking and entrepreneurship started at a young age while working with his grandfather. Always a family man, he includes his two young boys in the woodshop too! The family run business helps other local families with their design visions and home improvement projects.

Rolling in to Texas with all the possibility in the world.

Josh moved his family from Massachusetts in 2021 to start up his own business. After working in precision metalworking for well over 10 years, he decided that it was time to stop missing out on his boys growing up and work alongside them. He invested in everything he needed to create custom furniture and built-ins then set off to work! With his woodshop on his home property, the commute to work is now very short.

Josh wanted to own his own business ever since he was a kid. Woodworking always held a special place for him, he built many pieces that graced his home in Massachusetts. Now he’s built about a dozen for his home in Texas, as well as many more for clients!

His favorite part of being a Texas furniture maker is listening to his clients, realizing their vision and turning it into a reality. Many Texas homes are built with fireplaces in the center of the living room with blank alcoves on both sides. He discovered that many people want to have a built-in on either side to allow for more storage and to make their house their own. This has been a large part of his business since moving here and one project he loves to do over and over. Each one is unique to his client and their home style.

Josh and his sons, Dallas and Kirby

Let’s hear a little bit about Josh and who he is!

Josh and Elizabeth Newton are the husband and wife that operate Wachusett Woodworks in Weatherford, Texas. They were married at nineteen and have spent more than half their lives together. The Massachusetts natives had both of their boys back in their home state before moving the whole family down to Texas. Josh loves the opportunity to watch his boys grow up with homeschool and working from home! Dallas and Kirby are both very lucky to have a dad who is so dedicated to raising them right. Josh show them how to have attention to detail and good listening skills every day.

Aside from woodworking, some of Josh’s favorite hobbies are guitar, video games and cooking. He used to play in a Christian hardcore band when he lived in Massachusetts. Don’t worry, his vast guitar collection made the move down to Texas. He will never part with those beauties! He loves playing Pokemon with the boys and retro games like Sonic the Hedgehog. Josh is a wiz in the kitchen, whipping up Pad Thai, beef roasts and smoking briskets. He makes the kitchen smell incredible every night.

Why go custom? I could just buy something from IKEA!

First and foremost, that IKEA furniture is hard to put together. You practically need to hire someone to assemble and decipher the instructions for you! Hiring a Texas furniture maker instead ensures that your piece will work perfectly in your home and be installed by the one who built it. Josh works very closely with his clients to bring their ideas home. He spends the extra time to properly pad the furniture in his trailer to make sure that they arrive perfectly.
